Pharmacy Technician

Ideal for

Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other health care products to patients. As a technician you must be aware of the necessity for aseptic technique, cleanliness, orderliness and accuracy in the work areas. You may be working in hospital and community pharmacies, extended care facilities, home health care or industry settings. As a pharmacy technician, you should possess good math skills, be able to tactfully deal with customers and patients and enjoy precise work because details are sometimes a matter of life and death. If this sounds like a good career fit for you, then this program may be just for you!

Program Overview

The Pharmacy Technician Program will prepare you to enter this exciting and rewarding career field and become a valuable member of the broader health care team. Join your classmates and learn the basic drug classifications, aseptic technique, and math needed to provide the highest quality service to your patients and customers.  

Upon successful completion of the classroom course, students are eligible to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam.

      Important Information

      Prerequisites for Pharmacy Technician Classroom course:
      • Must be at least 18 years old
      • High school diploma, GED or home schooling equivalency
      • Basic math skills including the ability to solve simple algebraic equations

      Pharmacy Technician National Certification Exam Information

      The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) offers the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). The PTCE assesses candidates' competence to perform the work of a pharmacy technician. Students who successfully complete the NVCC Pharmacy Technician program will be eligible to take this exam. The cost is $129 and is not included in the cost of the course. The exam may be taken at the option of the student at a private off-campus test center. PTCB's pharmacy technician certification program is designed to validate that a technician possesses the knowledge and skills to work effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. Certification is respected by employers but is not required for employment. 

      Pharmacy Technician State Registration

      The State of Connecticut requires pharmacy technicians to be registered with the State. Additional information about this requirement and the application forms may be found on the State of Connecticut site.

       

      Course Registration and Payment Plans

      No formal application to the College is required for non-credit/workforce training courses.

      Registrations are accepted on an ongoing basis for upcoming classes.

      The Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL) reports the average annual income for Pharmacy Technicians is $34,703.  Employment opportunities as a Pharmacy Technician are expected to grow about as fast as average and the number of annual openings will offer very good job opportunities.
