2022 Spring Conference of New England Region of Phi Theta Kappa sees NVCC win awards for Honors in Action, Distinguished Chapter and Advisor

Naugatuck Valley Community College’s (NVCC)Alpha Theta Epsilon (ATE) chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society were recognized for leadership and achievement at the New England Regional PTK Spring 2022 conference at Asnuntuck Community College on March 26, 2022. These accolades are a direct result of the unwavering determination of our team members and faculty advisors John Harding and Alan Teitleman.

NVCC’s PTK-ATE chapter came in second place for Honors in Action – Theme 1. The project, “The Heirs of Our Ways,” addresses the question of how we acknowledge our inheritance and support children in ways that promise humanity’s greatest potential. NVCC PTK students explored climate change and the sociological practices of recycling. This led to the development of a week-long social media campaign on the importance of recycling and the development of curricula for 2nd, 3rd, and 6th graders which was presented at schools in Naugatuck, CT and Millbury, MA. A group effort, the Honors in Action project was spearheaded by Emily Diedrich who provided valuable leadership.

NVCC’s chapter also came in second place for Most Distinguished Chapter in the New England Region. This distinction is no doubt a result of achieving the monumental threshold of five-star status and continued efforts to pursue even higher status.

In addition to the chapter and project awards, Alan Teitleman, NVCC’s co-advisor, was honored as the recipient of two advisor awards: the prestigious Paragon Award and the Horizon Award. New advisors with fewer than four years of service are eligible for the Paragon Award and awardees may receive this honor only once. The Horizon Award, determined by PTK Regional Coordinators, is given annually to an outstanding PTK advisor.

Members of NVCC’s ATE chapter of PTK are incredibly thankful for the roles Teitleman and Diedrich played in helping to exceed their annual goals. The chapter’s achievements are also a result of the contributions from all the participating members, the officer team, and co-advisor John Harding, as well as the unwavering support of the NVCC administration and student body. Here’s to another outstanding year for the Alpha Theta Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa!
