‘The Tamarack’ Racks Up More Honors from Society of Professional Journalists

For the second consecutive year, The Tamarack, Naugatuck Valley Community College’s student newspaper, has been honored by the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists for excellence in campus reporting.

The paper and Creative Director Janice Bielawa received two design awards at the society’s annual meeting and awards dinner on May 21. In the Page 1 Layout category, the paper was honored with a second-place award for its October 1, 2014 story titled “College activism not dead, just different.” In the   Non-Page 1 Layout category, the paper received a third-place award for its November 4, 2014 story titled “Can college still get you a job?”

“It’s gratifying to see the whole team’s hard work recognized,” said Claire Dignan, editor of The Tamarack. She noted that the paper’s team of approximately 20 is competing and accumulating honors in a field that includes publications produced by four-year institutions across the state. “It’s definitely a motivation booster... it helps us see that our hard work is going toward something and we’re producing real quality, excellent work.”

Last year, The Tamarack was honored with a second-place award for Print Page 1 Layout and a third-place award for Print Editorial.
