Waterbury, Conn. – Students and NVCC leaders and alumni celebrated the accomplishments made through the college’s clubs and activities during an annual student leadership banquet May 29.

The event is a way of honoring students and advisors who have volunteered their time and energy working within the 40 clubs that comprise the Student Government Association to make NVCC a better place.

“There are so many great things happening at the school, and the members of the SGA and all the clubs have tremendous hearts and a lot to teach us about kindness and giving of themselves,” NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph. D. said.

Student Government Association President Ramon Velazquez said he chose to become involved with the NVCC community his freshman year because he enjoys working with people, and making a difference.

“The best part of being so involved is the networking, and the relationships you form,” Velazquez said. “I’ve had such a positive experience being involved in student activities, I’m really going to miss everyone.”

Guests such as Greater Waterbury YMCA Executive Director Jim O’Rourke, an NVCC alumni, shared how NVCC served as an integral role in forging his career path. 

“One thing NVCC was able to provide was a great foundation,” O’Rourke said. “I found that all my classes at the schools I attended after were easy because of the preparation I received here.”

The celebration remained lively, with artistic performances by the Stage Society and the Terpsichorean Dance Ensemble, followed by dancing.

Director of Student Activities Karen Blake thanked the advisors for their guidance and help allowing students to make important differences within the community. Clubs such as the Agro-Biology Club volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen throughout the year, making sure the kitchen remains open on Sundays, and worked to beautify the campus throughout the years.

“Our clubs have accomplished so much within the community,” Blake said. “We thank our students, advisors and staff members for making it all possible.”
