Outstanding Students Recognized at Honors Night

Waterbury, Conn. – More than 100 students and their families gathered for Naugatuck Valley Community College's annual Honors Night on Tuesday, May 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the College's Fine Arts Center. Honors Night highlights achievements made by both graduating and returning students over the course of the academic year.

In addition to academic scholarships and awards for academic excellence, the ceremony included memorial scholarships and industry awards recognizing students of distinction.

Family members, professors and NVCC faculty attended the celebration to show support and acknowledge the culmination of a successful academic year.

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. congratulated students for excelling in their studies and choosing to make the most of their experience at NVCC.

“This is an event of celebration for all the good work our students have accomplished,” President De Filippis said. “It is our hope that when you leave us, you take the honor you have received and you become contributors to humanity.”

For student Regina Marshall, who was inducted to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society as well, the choice to take honors classes helped her earn a full ride to a four-year college next year.

“It’s been hard work, but my professors were very helpful and always there when I needed it,” Marshall said.
Nursing students Gina Vierra, Angelika Dunn, Dawn Nazario and Joanna Mijcher said the night meant taking time to look back on years of hard work and accomplishment.

“It’s been a struggle at times, but we worked very hard to get into the nursing program and stay in the program, so we’re really honored to be here,” Vierra said.
