NVCC’s Upward Bound Program Welcomes Fall Semester
Share
The College manages four UB programs with Waterbury public schools including two at Crosby High School (UB Math/Science and UB Crosby), as well as UB Kennedy, and UB Wilby. All four cohorts participated in Saturday’s event which prepared students for online learning in a virtual setting.
The drive-through event featured giveaways to support online learning including backpacks, masks, Upward Bound gear and back-to-school supplies. Upward Bound staff greeted students and their families on the NVCC campus to distribute the supplies. Parents and guardians who attended were entered in a drawing to receive Shop-Rite gift cards. Tim Magee, Bridge to College Director, NVCC oversees the program. “With such limited opportunities to work with our students within their schools, it was wonderful to re-connect and make sure that we were able to provide them with necessary supplies for virtual learning and remind them of all the virtual support we are able to provide”
Upward Bound is one of the oldest Trio Programs. It is a highly successful college-based program of rigorous academic instruction, individual tutoring, and counseling for low-income, disadvantaged high school students, many of whom will be first generation college students. Upward Bound students are involved in an intensive academic study program with an emphasis on English, mathematics, science, foreign language, and global citizenship. During the academic year, they receive instruction, tutoring and mentoring after school. Mentors follow their progress in high school and the students learn about the college application process and how to apply for student financial assistance.
The Math-Science Program is designed to help low-income and first-generation high school students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, pursue post-secondary degrees, and ultimately careers in the math and science professions. Activities, trips, and involvement are designed to help students become more familiar with S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education.
Since the program is currently virtual, UB staff works to engage the students in pursuing activities and events that promote the goals of the program.
Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D., Dean of Academic Affairs, commented on the program. “I’m delighted to know how our Upward Bound programs are engaging the students at Crosby, Kennedy, and Wilby High Schools. NVCC is proud to partner with the Waterbury Public School System to offer these programs to their students.”
