NVCC’s Social Justice Series Opens Semester of “Changes and Challenges” Events with Local Activist Panel

Titled, “Raising Voices, Raising Awareness,” the panelists included founder of MyReflectionMatters, Chemay Morales-James. Morales-James talked about her work with an organization whose mission involves, “…providing the tools necessary to support and nurture the development of healthy racial and cultural identities of Black and Brown children and older youth.” Panelist Jered Bruzas, the Shelter Director of the Saint Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury talked about his work to help eliminate the root causes of homelessness in the Greater-Waterbury area and how he and his organization are working to make a positive difference in the lives of the homeless, hungry, and mentally ill through promoting professionally-supportive relationships with caring adults. Robert M. Goodrich, a co-founder of the Radical Advocates for Cross-Cultural Education(R.A.C.C.E.) explained how his work with the organization challenges the systems of oppression by advocating for culturally-competent educational practices in the state of Connecticut.
The next Social Justice Series-sponsored event will be held on Wednesday, November 28 in L501 and will center around a conversation where participants will discuss the social justice issues that they care about most, and explore real-life strategies that will help create the change(s) that they want to see in the world.
