NVCC and Western CT Mental Health Network Hold Symposium on Violence
NVCC and the Western Connecticut Mental Health Network teamed up to host the third annual “Innovations in Behavioral Health Symposium” which was held on the College’s Waterbury campus on September 28.

The half-day conference centered around the theme of violence and who is at risk and included information on the history and origins of violence in our society.  Participants were provided information on topics such as assessing the risk of violence, duty to warn, regulation of gun ownership, and treatment in the community as well as methods for how to interface with law enforcement. The program included a keynote by Dr. Charles Dike, Medical Director for Connecticut’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and presentations by: Dr. Tobias Wasser, Chief Medical Officer of Whiting Forensic Hospital; TFC Brianni Tassinari of the Connecticut State Police, and Assistant Chief Shaun McColgan of the Danbury Police Department. The half-day presentation allowed participants to earn Continuing Medical Education hours and Continuing Education Units.

Students from the College’s Human Services Club helped run the event and sold refreshments throughout the day to support their endeavors this semester.  The Human Services Club supports the College’s mission by providing a dynamic and interactive environment for the club members to enhance their education about social services and client needs in the ever-changing community and service delivery system. The club focuses on providing: services through community volunteer activities, the donation of needed items to community agencies, and facilitating educational/information forums on campus.
