NVCC’s Center for Early Childhood Education Hosts Storytelling, Cookies, and Cocoa for Parents and Children
NVCC’s Center for Early Childhood Education hosted dozens of parents and children for a fun-filled story-telling literacy event that kicked off with cocoa and cookies. Families and teachers participated in a half-hour reception enjoying hot cocoa and a delicious array of various home baked cookies and recipes brought in by teachers and families.  Following the reception, participants gathered in NVCC’s Playbox Theater to enjoy a live re-enacted reading of iconic childhood favorite, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. The well-attended event is one of many regular events held for parents and students by the CDC. Other events planned for this Spring include:
  • Young Author events where stories written, illustrated and bound by the children are shared with their families
  • The Poetry and Jam College community event hosted by the children where all are invited to share their favorite poem or song lyrics
  • The Art Exhibit, where a variety of the children’s 2- and 3-dimensional art work is on display in the Walkway West Gallery on Fifth Avenue
  • The Center’s Community Garden where the children and their families open up the Center herb, vegetable and edible flower gardens
  • Community Yoga where children and their families are led through child friendly yoga poses that foster greater self-regulation skills
  • “This is an event that has grown over the years from a small gathering in our classrooms to what we experienced tonight in the Playbox Theater. Developmentally-appropriate early literacy is so important for young children. MariLynne Spino, Laura Petrakopoulos and Krissy Maksymiw have lead this event since it began in 2013 and have found a way to promote literacy for families and children in a way that is whimsical and fun!” said Abbie Calo, Director of Child Development.

Established in 1977, the CDC is a state-of-the-art early care and education facility for young children and teacher training guided by the Reggio Emilia Approach philosophy. The high-quality school is accredited by the NAEYC and offers discovery-based learning for children from 18 months to kindergarten age. For more information, visit, nv.edu/cdc.
