NVCC, United Way of Greater Waterbury Host Financial Literacy Workshops

Naugatuck Valley Community College and the United Way of Greater Waterbury have launched a series of free financial literacy workshops for members of the campus community and the general public. The series is held in cooperation with the Connecticut Association for Human Services. So far, the workshops have covered “financial aid tips for new or continuing students” and “tips for budgets, spending wisely and making and saving money.”

Two additional workshops are planned for the coming months covering the following topics:

· Borrowing Basics – Understanding credit and loans
Tuesday, March 8, 3:00-4:30 pm or Wednesday, March 9, 7:00-8:30 pm

· Consumer Contracts – Rental contracts, leasing and knowing your rights
Monday, April 4, 3:00-4:30 pm or Wednesday, April 6, 7:00-8:30 pm

NVCC Dean of Community Engagement, Waldemar Kostrzewa and Director of the Library, Jaime Hammond are coordinating the workshops at the College, with support from Elizabeth Catuccio in the Development Office. "This is a major collaborative effort to benefit NVCC students and the greater Waterbury community. The topics enable workshop participants to learn more about how to navigate their finances and plan their budgets," Kostrzewa said.

JoAnn Reynolds Balanda, VP of Community for United Way of Greater Waterbury stated “A flourishing community starts with healthy and secure families.  By working together with Naugatuck Valley Community College to provide free access to budgeting, credit and saving skills, we can improve the financial stability of students and families.”

All workshops are free and open to the public. Easy online registration is requested at nv.edu/money. The series will be hosted on the NVCC campus at 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury in Room L501 of the Traurig Learning Resources Center/Library building. Light refreshments will be served.
