NVCC Students Honored by NASA CT Space Grant
The NASA CT Space Grant Consortium awarded 10 Community College Scholarships this Fall 2016 semester. Naugatuck Valley Community College students earned 6 of the 10 scholarships worth $1,500 each. The students were from different disciplines in the college represented by Josiel Batista Matos, Advanced Manufacturing Machine Technology; Lindsey Japa, Engineering Technology; Jody Jarvella, General Studies with an interest in Information Technology; Levi Reynolds, Math/Science with an interest in Physics; Andre Roscoe, Engineering Science; and Lanaya Shuler, Nursing. Each semester the NASA CT Space Grant Consortium gives 8-10 Community College Scholarships to students with an interest in a STEM field through a competitive proposal process. NVCC has had a strong showing among the scholarship recipients every semester since spring 2014, consistently at least two NVCC students have received scholarships.

The Space Grant Consortium also awarded three Community College Transfer Scholarships worth $5,000 this fall 2016 semester for students who started at a community college and are now matriculating at a university in the Consortium. Former NVCC student Emina Hodzic, now at the University of Hartford, earned one of these scholarships. This semester is the first time the Transfer Scholarship has been offered. Going forward, the Consortium plans to give three of these scholarships per semester to community college students who transfer to a four-year institution in the CT Space Grant Consortium with an interest in a STEM field.

Levi Reynolds a Math/Science major with an interest in Physics received one of the $1,500 scholarships. “I grew up closely following NASA, and all the awe-inspiring things that they do,” says Reynolds, “so receiving a scholarship from this particular institution is incredibly encouraging, and humbling. I’d like to sincerely thank Dr. Angelastro and the STEM department for fostering success in this college, and supporting STEM student success.”

The CT Space Grant Consortium will soon be accepting applications for both scholarships for the Spring 2017 semester as well as applications for Summer Technical Internships. The application due date for these opportunities is February 7, 2017.
