CSCU President Mark Ojakian addressed the crowd with strong praise for President De Filippis, “…because she cares,” he noted. The honorable Mark Boughton, Mayor of the City of Danbury, also praised the President and the College for the opportunities that the new and growing campus brings to students and to the city. Student Government President, Keila Franco addressed the audience expressing pride and gratitude on behalf of the students. The program was followed by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and reception with tours of the campus.
The new expanded Danbury campus is located in a 1920’s art deco building on the corner of Main and West streets. This landmark on the downtown Danbury landscape has not been occupied for 23 years according to landlord, Joe DaSilva. The entire community is optimistic about the potential that this newly renovated campus brings downtown. Filled with labs, classrooms, offices, conference rooms, and state-of-the-art computer labs, ACE tutoring and library technology space, the 20,000 square foot facility that was gutted to partition spaces in this new location of the Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Danbury campus, signals a new beginning.
Fall classes at the new Danbury campus began this semester. Approximately thirteen hundred students are enrolled at this campus. Buses run between the Waterbury and Danbury locations. The NEASC accredited Danbury campus offers all courses required to successfully complete the Business Management, Liberal Arts and Science and General Studies degrees along with credit certificates in Administrative Support and Business Management from start to finish. Students can also register for any of NVCC’s 88 credit degrees or certificates when starting here, including an Advanced Manufacturing Technology certificate offered in collaboration with Henry Abbott Technical High School. The expanded campus also provides for additional opportunities within our growing non-credit, life-long learning certificate programs and course offerings.
Danbury credit students receive a free unlimited Housatonic Area Regional Transit bus pass. In addition, the college recently partnered with Peter Pan bus lines to offer its students a transportation link between NVCC’s Danbury and Waterbury campuses at a significantly reduced rate of $2.00 per one-way trip.
