NVCC Hosts Second Annual STEMagination Event

Evening Event Highlights Career Options in STEM Fields

NVCC hosted Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s STEMagination event on February 15. The yearly meeting offers hands-on activities to teach girls about career options in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. Girl Scouts of Connecticut and their community partners sponsored the program which hosted 52 girls and their parents from 11 towns around the state. The five sessions included demonstrations and activities by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, ASML, Women in Architecture, H&T Manufacturing, and NVCC’s nursing and horticulture students. NVCC Associate Professor of Biology, Peter Angelastro, Ph.D. and Dr. Kathy Murphy, a professor of nursing, welcomed the girls in their opening remarks and talked about the advantages of selecting NVCC as a college to pursue STEM careers.

NVCC’s Horticulture Club supplied participants with materials to create their own succulent terrarium with the club’s greenhouse succulents. Horticulture Professor, Chris Tuccio and student Megan Barrios led the event. Dr. Murphy and first-year nursing students Crystal Wood, Estella Guaman, Blerina Manjani, Oko Epse Babo Okou Nourdine, Isabel Mendez, and Lidia Tatiana Equez showed the scouts how to take their pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen levels at a first aid table.

Professor Angelastro said, "This is a wonderful collaboration between Girl Scouts of Connecticut and Naugatuck Valley Community College. Having the Girl Scouts work with our students, companies, non-profits, and professional organizations demonstrates the potency of a community coming together to educate our youth. This is particularly important because research shows that young women begin to lose interest in STEM during middle school. We hope an event like this sparks a lifelong interest in STEM."

Ellyn Savard, Senior Manager of the Girl Scouts of Connecticut STEM Program, said, “It’s important for our girls to see higher education in their futures, so we like to get them on college campuses whenever possible. Naugatuck Valley Community College has been a gracious and enthusiastic host and their state-of-the-art facility is the perfect place for Girl Scouts to participate in STEM activities and learn about careers in STEM that they (and their parents) may not have known existed.”
