NVCC Celebrates Manufacturing Awards to Outstanding Students
On Wednesday, August 28, the AMTC at NVCC celebrated the annual Presidential Awards Ceremony, where high-performing manufacturing students from the evening cohort were recognized. This group, consisting of students in their second semester, will complete in December. Many work other jobs before coming to the 2:00-10:00 pm classes, 5 days a week for a year, in order to earn the certificate that leads to a job in manufacturing.  In presenting these awards, President De Filippis expressed how proud she is of this group for their efforts and commitment. “I am so grateful to have such a successful manufacturing program at NVCC. The program, supported by over 200 industry partners, leads to 100% job placement. I celebrate the resilience, fortitude and dedication of our students and the talent and generosity of our faculty and staff.”

The top ten students, based on GPA, were selected for additional free educational training in the field of Additive Manufacturing and Solid Works.  This mini one-week class is a highly-sought award because it is a valuable accreditation among local manufacturers. In addition, all students who have a B or better average were awarded an OSHA 10 safety training certification. According to NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, the awards program was started seven years ago as an incentive for AMTC Students to perform well in their studies by providing additional training at no-cost. At today’s awards ceremony fourteen students were presented with awards for B or better grades and the top ten students were awarded Presidential Awards. All students received a gold-wrapped book of poems.

President De Filippis, distributed a poem, Elephant in the Dark, by Rumi, a 13th Century, Persian Poet. She challenged the students to write to her about the meaning of the poem and how it relates to manufacturing.
