Naugatuck Valley Community College Welcomes New Students at Fall 2016 Orientation Program
More than 450 new students and their families attended the Saturday Orientation program hosted by Naugatuck Valley Community College. The morning opened with a continental breakfast. The top twenty resources for an incoming college student were represented in the Leever Atrium of the Fine Arts Center on the Waterbury Campus including the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), Academic Division Leaders, the Center for Job Placement and College Opportunities, and Veteran’s Affairs to name a few. The formal program was introduced by Dean of Student Services, Sarah Gager. Welcoming remarks on behalf of NVCC President, Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., were presented by Provost and Senior Dean of Administration, James Troup, who concluded his welcome with the poem, “It is I Who Must Begin”  by Václav Havel.

William H. Foster III, respected professor of English gave the faculty outlook with great enthusiasm, sharing anecdotes of his own experience as a student. The take-away was a warm welcome with a humorous reminder of what to expect at NVCC. Dean of Academic Affairs, Irene Rios-Knauf, Ed.D. welcomed the new students on behalf of the academic divisions, followed by Keila Franco, NVCC Student Government President. On behalf of Public Safety, Jeffrey D’Alusio, Acting Lieutenant/Director presented an overview of the campus safety to close the program.

Dean Gager separated the audience into student and parent sections so that each could attend breakout sessions directed at their information needs. Parents went to the Playbox Theater for “boot camp” led by the College registrar followed by information on financial aid, disability services and veterans affairs. Students remained in the Mainstage Theater for Counseling and Advising to Keep You On Track presented by CAPPS Director, Bonnie Goulet followed by Resources for Student Success by Robert Sheftel, Director of the ACE and Jaime Hammond, Director of Library Services. The day concluded with a short video and campus tours https://youtu.be/d5R8Q-FvTB0 . The Student Services areas remained open to help students be ready for classes on opening day, Monday, August 29, 2016.

Associate Dean of the Danbury Campus, Antonio Santiago reported that the Saturday event at the NVCC Danbury Campus was the final “Express START” session which offered testing, financial aid and advising opportunities. “It was the busiest day in the entire month of August. We helped over 130 students to register for fall classes.”

The staff at the Danbury campus reported that it was a great opportunity to meet and help so many students and their families become acclimated to the college. The new students were excited about their opportunities as the first class entering the new campus at 190 Main St. With the newly expanded campus, courses never offered in Danbury before such as Graphic Design and Human Biology are available.
