Naugatuck Valley Community College Hosted Connecticut Association of Latinos in Higher Education (CALAHE)
Established by Latino educators in 1978, CALAHE is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the participation of Latinos in different areas of post-secondary education in Connecticut.  Their mission is to promote and advocate for full access, retention and participation of Latinos/Latinas throughout Connecticut higher education. The scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors or GED equivalent and undergraduate college students.

Twenty-five Latino students from colleges and universities throughout Connecticut received $1,000 scholarship awards at the reception. The criteria for selection include involvement with and commitment to activities that promote Latinos’ pursuit of higher education, acceptance to an accredited institution of higher education, a cumulative GPA of 2.75 for all completed course work at the time of application, citizenship in both the U.S. and Connecticut during the 12 months preceding the application and demonstration of financial need. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students seeking their first undergraduate degree and are required to attend the annual scholarship reception. The application also includes a two-page essay: "How do you feel education is going to impact your ability to continue assisting others to pursue an education?"

CALAHE raises the money for the scholarships through a calendar of fundraisers and memberships including their annual golf tournament which will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Indian Hill Country Club.  For more information on the tournament and ways to participate please contact Wilson Luna, tournament director at

This year’s group represents high school students in the top 10% of their school standings and college students from 14 different towns in Connecticut.”
