Naugatuck Valley Community College Dedicates Atelier in Early Childhood Education Center to former Professor
Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) hosted a dedication ceremony to mark the naming of the Marianne Generali Grand Atelier in the Early Childhood Education Center. Generali was the Director of the Child Development Center laboratory school when the Center and Early Childhood Education (ECE) program adopted the Reggio Emilia Approach philosophy. Based on integrating the visual arts and utilizing graphic representation to show children’s learning, this philosophy marked a turning point in the development of early childhood curriculum.

A pioneer in the field of early childhood education, Generali was the creative force behind the integration of this philosophy into the program and practice of the Lab School. From this evolution of early childhood education, the Child Development Center laboratory school became the leading observation site in the state for ECE observation students, pre-service teachers and early childhood educators. During her 30-year tenure at the College, Generali continued to inspire the children and families, staff and ECE students with her creativity and vision.

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks about the Early Childhood Education Center. “It is one of my favorite places on campus because it is a great example of what faculty and staff can do to make a difference in the lives of our students.” She continued remarks to recognize Genarali for her creative contribution to the center.

President De Filippis invited 4C’s Union Representative, Dave Bosco to read the poem Art by Herman Melville.  NVCC Hospitality students provided the menu for the dedication. Karen Rotella, Coordinator of the NVCC Hospitality Program, noted, “Our brunch today was the culmination of ideas created by the two student managers, Keysha Santiago and Caitlin Costello. They provided guidance to their classmates in preparing the food, decorating the tables and organizing the service staff. We were delighted to be a part of the ceremony to honor Marianne Generali.”

Generali was present with three generations of her family. Her mother, daughters, sister and grandchildren attended to celebrate the honor bestowed by the naming ceremony.
