Horticulture and Hospitality Industry Summit Focuses on Careers and Curriculum
In an effort to keep its curriculum current for its students and to help close the skill gap in the state, Naugatuck Valley Community College turned to the experts on April 19 at its Horticulture and Hospitality Summit. Focused on industry careers and trends in the horticulture and hospitality industries, the summit was hosted by NVCC and held on its Waterbury campus. The summit provided an opportunity for professionals in the horticulture and hospitality industries along with state and local leaders, and NVCC faculty and staff to discuss the skills, education and future outlook in the field of horticulture/hospitality. Speakers at the summit included:

  • The Honorable Neil M. O’Leary, Mayor, City of Waterbury  
  • Steven K. Reviczky, Commissioner of Agriculture, State of Connecticut
  • Henry Talmage, Executive Director, Connecticut Farm Bureau
  • Richard McAvoy, Ph.D., Department Head of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT
  • Chris Eddy, Executive Chef, Winvian, Morris, CT
  • Robert DeZinno, Owner, DT Media Group, A CT-based hospitality and consulting firm
  • Diane St. John, Retail Manager and Organic Land Care Educator, Natureworks
  • John Campanelli, Doctoral student - Ecological Restoration, Department of Plan Science and
  • Landscape Architecture, University of Connecticut
  • Bill Davenport, Director, Ellis Clark Regional Agriscience & Technology Program, Nonnewaug High School, Woodbury, CT

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., said, “We are pleased to have the presence and participation of so many leaders governmental, industry, and educational partners as NVCC continues to engage industry, community, and the college community to support our strategic plan thorough thoughtful and collaborative academic program planning.”

NVCC has held six of seven planned industry sector summits in the areas of advanced manufacturing, information technology (cybersecurity), allied health (surgical technology), bioscience, and financial services. The summits bring together business and academia to support the relevant curriculum that serves the needs of employers in the region and prepares students for careers. The College’s next summit will bring professionals and educators together around a dialogue on the energy industry.
