Share

Waterbury-Students displayed their work and research during the Honors Institute Showcase on May 3, unveiling projects they’ve worked on independently through the semester.

Nursing student Leidy Lange shared her work on Poiseuille’s law to demonstrate how trigonometry can be used in medicine. She’s working to towards her nursing degree, with the goal of becoming an anesthesiologist.

“I wanted to do everything I can to help me gain acceptance to medical school, and this was a good experience for that,” Lange said. “It was helpful doing my project on paper, so I could really explain to people about my research.”

The Honors Institute allows academically successful students to take higher level courses equaling up to 20 additional hours of work each semester, to increase their learning opportunities while earning an “Honors” designation.

“We are very proud of all our Honors Institute students this year,” said Sandra Palmer, Ph.D., dean of academic affairs. “They’ve worked very hard in presenting outstanding projects, showing a high level of dedication and professionalism within each of their disciplines.”

Computer Information student Jason Newberry used his project to show the progress of cellular technology through the years. He said his experience within the Honors Institute was a way of improving his presentation skills.

“I was a little nervous the first few times I had to explain the project to people, but by the last time, I felt good, and I enjoyed the experience, said Newberry.”

Honors Advisory Committee member Kathryn Murphy said the Honors Institute not only gives students ways to learn more at a higher level, but also grows students’ leadership and critical thinking skills.

“The students work individually in planning what their project is, so they gain leadership skills and also experience presenting during the showcase,” Murphy said. “It was a great event.”
