Commenting on Shakera’s success, NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis noted. “I am not surprised. Our students do us credit and are appreciated for their preparation and seriousness of purpose. Shakera is a true example of a dedicated, engaged and talented NVCC student.”
During her tenure at NVCC, Shakera Jones was a work study student in the marketing department where she recorded video messages to help prospective students understand the value of starting at NVCC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxBQTnHHXzM and how to navigate the challenges of financial aid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8Lbdkk3GFM
Shakera’s support and encouragement of prospective students has impacted her own family. Following her advice on all that NVCC has to offer, Shakera’s mother, Tamika Kirkland and sister, Shaquonna Jones enrolled at NVCC.
Tamika Kirkland enrolled to pursue a degree in Business Management. She noted. “My goal is to further my education in order to move up in my current company and eventually open my own business again. I started out at NVCC in order change my career and start working toward a bachelor’s degree.” Based on her experience at the College, Ms. Kirkland said that she would advise students. “Enroll sooner than later, don’t wait if you are able to. Use the resources available to you. Re-enrolling in school after some time wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. My first semester I enrolled in an intro to business course and it was a great experience for me to re-adjust to college. The professor knew my personal story and worked with me to come up with a plan to succeed. With the help of Professor Holmes, I gained confidence in taking more classes and you will too.”
Shakera’s sister, Shaquonna Jones enrolled in the Nursing program at NVCC. “After going to a private university, I felt like I was lost in the mix. I enrolled at NVCC to get a more personalized experience. I wanted to better myself at this community college. I plan to become a Registered Nurse, and to pursue my bachelors and master’s degrees. Hopefully, I can be placed in the same hospital that I will be doing my clinicals. I also hope to become a travelling nurse.”
Shaquonna Jones told us that she would advise students who are new to NVCC. “Get acquainted with the faculty and staff. The more people you have on your team, the more help and guidance you will receive, which helps when you have to make important decisions. Being at NVCC feels like a home. I’m in my community and I can relate to my peers. The people at NVCC makes my family and me comfortable and happy to attend NVCC. Meeting the President of the college was an amazing experience. When she gave me a hug it felt like she was a close relative; she is definitely in touch with the NVCC community and makes me proud to attend.”
NVCC is definitely a place for families. Commenting on the connection that families form with the College when one student influences the rest of their family to pursue their goals at NVCC, President De Filippis noted. “I am grateful that Shakera and her family believe in the quality and value of an NVCC education. Many families trust us and feel at home at NVCC. For that, I am grateful for the culture of care practiced and promulgated by our faculty, staff and administration. Students have taken notice and so have their families and neighbors.”
