Education is a Family Affair at Naugatuck Valley Community College
When Elida De Jesus graduated from Naugatuck Valley Community College in May 2016, she was awarded the President to President Scholarship to attend Eastern Connecticut State University.  Inspired by NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., and presented by Eastern President Elsa Núñez, Ed.D., the award recognizes academic excellence and commitment to the continued pursuit of higher education. At the awards ceremony that year, President De Filippis, in words and with an embrace, personally informed President Núñez that she was receiving one of NVCC’s treasures. “I knew then, as I know now, that Elida is a dedicated, intelligent and very poised young woman who will contribute greatly to her communities and to the world community in years to come.”

De Jesus is now a senior at Eastern planning to graduate in the spring of 2018, and she has ambitious plans to work for one year before continuing her studies towards a master’s degree in finance. Her long term goal is a career based in New York City in International Finance.

De Jesus worked in the marketing department at NVCC while she was a student there and the marketing team remembered Elida as a beautiful student with an intense work ethic who was responsible and mature beyond her youth. Sarah Gager, Dean of Student Services at NVCC, remembered her well. “She contributed enthusiastically to everything we did. We remember fondly her beautiful smile and excellent work. We were so proud to have her on our team and as a part of our marketing family. “

Last week Elida came back to visit her friends in the Marketing Department. “This is my family,” she laughed. This was more than just a social call. Elida was visiting the College with her brother, Orlando, a 2017 graduate of Wilby High School who will be attending NVCC this fall. He is planning a career in computer programing. Orlando learned about NVCC from his brother, Kendrick, and sister, Elida. The De Jesus family is an example of the difference that community colleges make to the families they serve.

Elida noted, “If I had to tell a student about NVCC, I would want them to know that NVCC can prepare you for any career you want. The classes are rigorous, the help is here. You just have to do it.”
