Annual Student Leadership Banquet Highlights Vibrant Campus Life
Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) students, faculty and staff celebrated the accomplishments of the College’s clubs and activities during the annual Student Leadership and Recognition Banquet at the Grand Oak Villa. The event honors students and advisors who have volunteered their time and energy working within the clubs that comprise the Student Government Association (SGA). It opened with a social hour at the Grand Oak Villa, and the room was filled with smiles and laughter that echo the grateful sighs marking the end of an academic semester.

Following the welcome by NVCC Director of Student Activities, Karen Blake and the invocation by Newman Club Advisor, Dan Mathews, NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. opened the program with a poem by Robert Frost, The Road Less Travelled. She reminded the students to be true to themselves in choosing their paths and to choose with integrity. “Without it, you have nothing,” she advised the students.

Director of Student Activities Karen Blake acknowledged the officers and senators of the SGA.  After a performance by The Terpsichorean Dance Club, choreographed by George Hurdle III, Blake presided over the recognition of the Club Advisors. There are more than 40 clubs that contribute to the campus culture on both campuses, and club advisors guide activities and progress to help students achieve their goals.

“Our clubs have accomplished so much within the community,” Blake said. “We thank our students, advisors and staff members for making it all possible.”

The recognition ceremony closed with a performance by the Stage Society in which Caitlin Galbraith gave an animated performance of “Maybe This Time” from the musical, Cabaret.

The annual club awards were presented by Rita Ostrander, Student Activities Programming Assistant. Dean of Student Services, Sarah Gager, gave the closing remarks and the dancing began. Students, faculty and staff danced to celebrate the accomplishments of another year at NVCC.
