Workforce Grants at NVCC

There are several ways a potential student can qualify for grant funding.  At the Naugatuck Valley campus there is a centralized department that maintains partnerships with local agencies to expand funding opportunities for eligible students.  Available workforce development grants include:

WIOA

Workforce Investment Training available at CT State Naugatuck Valley!

CT State Naugatuck Valley maintains an ongoing partnership with the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, in the Greater Waterbury area to offer training to qualified adults and dislocated workers through the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) program. All approved programs are on the Eligible Training Program List (ETPL) which is available on www.CThires.com.

What is the purpose of WIOA?

WIOA programs seek to end poverty and promote an increase in the employment, job retention, earnings and occupational skills of participants. This, in turn, improves the quality of the workforce, reduces welfare dependency and improves the productivity and competitiveness of the nation. It is the goal of this program to ensure candidates develop the skills and credentials needed to successfully join the workforce in their chosen field of study.

Who can benefit from WIOA?

If you are unemployed, under employed or a dislocated worker you may be eligible for benefits. The best way to find out if you qualify for funding or services is to visit your local American Job Center(AJC) website and attend an information session. The AJC assists:

  • laid-off / dislocated workers
  • youth
  • incumbent workers
  • new workers
  • veterans
  • persons with disabilities
  • employers

Since a WIOA funding approval is needed before registering for classes it is important to also contact your local American Job Center, attend an orientation session to see if you are eligible and schedule an interview with your assigned Career Navigator.

Eligibility considerations for receiving funding include:

  • high school diploma or equivalent

TAA

What is the purpose of TAA?

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) provides assistance to workers in firms hurt by foreign trade. The TAA program offers a variety of benefits and services to eligible workers, including job training, income support, job search and relocation allowances and a wage supplement to certain reemployed trade-affected workers 50 years of age and older. These benefits are provided at no cost to employers.

Filing a petition is the first step in qualifying for program benefits. Generally your employer will file a petition, but individuals may also file. After the petition is filed, the U.S. Department of Labor will determine whether the reasons for separation meet the criteria for certification. If so, the CT Department of Labor will reach out to the adversely affected workers with program information and how to apply for benefits. What is the purpose of the Mortgage Crisis Grant?

The Mortgage Crisis Job Training Program helps homeowners who are behind on their mortgage payments become current by increasing their earning potential. The program is designed to help mortgage borrowers increase their job skills and become more financially stable.

The program offers:

  • Customized employment services
  • Job training scholarships
  • Job placement assistance
  • Financial literacy
  • Credit counseling
  • Referrals to other services

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be 60 days or more past due on a mortgage for their primary residence in Connecticut and have an annual household income under $120,000 or demonstrate an imminent need for the program’s services. Additionally, referrals are accepted from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority.

The program is offered at no cost through The WorkPlace in partnership with the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, Capital Workforce Partners, and Connecticut’s workforce system.
