Workforce Achievers Value Education (WAVE) Celebrates 12th Year of Success at Naugatuck Valley Community College
Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted an Orientation Ceremony for the 2016-17 class of WAVE students. Sponsored by the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, WAVE is in its 12th year at NVCC. New students from Wilby, Crosby, Kaynor Tech, Abbott Tech, Naugatuck, and Danbury High Schools were on hand to participate in the opening reception. Students in the WAVE program are recruited from the high schools in the service area of the College. The process of selection involves attendance at open houses, followed by a series of interviews that lead to the final selection.

Selection for the WAVE program is competitive.  Mitchell Holmes, Director of the Business Division at NVCC, noted, “This is a strong, well-prepared academic group… We have high expectations that they will maintain the GPA of last year’s group.  Second-year WAVE students have an average GPA of approximately 3.5.”

Managed by the Business Division of the College, WAVE assists students with the transition to further education and/or the job market.  It helps individuals succeed in the workplace and educates participants in developing real-world skills. Students are accepted based on academic qualification and federal eligibility requirements. They commit to attending NVCC full-time while working a limited number of hours for at least one year and meeting daily with program administrators through one-on-one conferences, lunches and/or classes.

The students who are accepted into the program are special. They have already succeeded and the trend continues. WAVE boasts a graduation rate of 89% after 5 semesters.   This year 100% of those who graduated continued their education at a four-year university.
