Third Greater Waterbury Educational Leadership Forum Held April 28

Secondary counselors, educators and leaders gather to learn about opportunities for students

Following up Sunday’s Open House, NVCC hosted the third annual Greater Waterbury Educational Leadership Forum for service region educators on Monday, April 30, 2014. The event is a project of Waterbury Mayor Neil M. O’Leary, who also heads the College’s Regional Advisory Council, and President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Like the Open House, the forum featured information booths and representatives from important academic and student service areas as well as the NV Danbury Center. Counselors, administrators and educators were encouraged to go from booth to booth and chat with representatives to learn more about the unique opportunities offered to incoming students.

Following these morning conversations, remarks by President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., and Waterbury Mayor Neil M. O’Leary segued into brief presentations on the College’s leadership on PA-1240 developmental education reform, STEM updates and an overview of the upcoming Founder’s Hall Renovation.

Mayor O’Leary thanked President De Filippis for making good on the College’s strategic promise to serve as an engine of change in the Waterbury region.

“The thing I like most about coming here is getting things done,” said Mayor O’Leary.

The College’s addition of the $11.2 million GEAR UP program has increased the College’s presence in Waterbury’s K-12 schools, something that the Mayor “couldn’t be happier with.”

“The difference has been phenomenal,” he said. “Everyone from the different institutions are working together and you can really see the changes starting to happen, which goes to show you the influence that these partnerships can have on our students. In a short period of time, we’ve made monumental strides. We’re getting on the same page, and we’re doing the right thing.”
