NVCC Student Calls Cybersecurity Internship, “A Golden Opportunity”
Murtaza Ali, Summer Intern in Corporate Information Security at Webster Bank is a student at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Ali first started gaining an interest in cybersecurity outside of school. Seeing that NVCC offered a Cybersecurity Degree program he decided to jump on it knowing that it would be a great way to gain knowledge in the field.  Mindful of his need to “to step into a path,” he attended a cybersecurity lecture at the College, where he met Damian Laviolette, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Security Officer of Webster Bank. Ali learned about the future potential within the cybersecurity industry. “If I hadn’t met Damian at that event, I may not have known about this opportunity. I am really happy to have found such a great fit with Webster Bank and I am looking forward to growing in this demanding career. I thank NVCC and Webster Bank for this opportunity.” Ali noted that has been very lucky to meet people throughout his life who have provided guidance and mentorship. He confidently recommends that students who feel lost or uncertain “consider NVCC as a place to find a firm footing with their career path and education.”

Ali plans to stay on as an intern at Webster as long as possible, while finishing the degree. The internship is giving him the opportunity to experience real, relevant work in cybersecurity.  Interns go through a rotational process getting exposure in 3 branches of cybersecurity- Risk Management, Operations, and Policy and Procedures, which allows them to see where their skills are best suited. In addition to this priceless experience, he calls his time at Webster “phenomenal” because it has given him the opportunity to give back to the community. Through Webster’s collaboration and support of Camp Courant, interns like Ali work with inner city kids in mentoring programs and summer camp activities. He loves how he can directly impact the kids in the local community; “Webster is big on that and it resonates so strongly with me too,” he noted.

Ali spoke about his experience in the Cybersecurity program at NVCC. The faculty are experienced in the field of cybersecurity which is very helpful for students in need of direction.

Cyber is a great opportunity for students who are interested in computers, catching the bad guys, are always willing to learn something new and are not afraid to ask questions.

Ali is also actively involved w ISACA, an independent, nonprofit, global association that engages in the development, adoption and use of globally accepted, industry-leading knowledge and practices for information systems. Previously known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, ISACA now goes by its acronym only, to reflect the broad range of IT governance professionals it serves. He is a member of Greater Hartford Regional Chapter, volunteering as liaison for the Director of Youth on the ISACA board.  He intends to have a bigger role on the board but in the meantime, is contributing by being a part of SheLeadsTech, an international committee that supports women in cybersecurity careers.  Based on this experience, Ali is helping the Greater Hartford Chapter of ISACA to create similar events like the one being hosted on October 10, 2018 where several high level influential woman leaders within IT will present inspirational and informative experiences that inspire and inform students/members towards careers in this growing industry.

Ali aims to forge strong ties between NVCC and ISACA so that students can benefit from this relationship. “Personally I’m hugely grateful for the opportunities that came my way as a result of being guided by the right people.  NVCC and the professors there gave me one such opportunity to sit in on a lecture from the CISO of Webster Bank, Damian Laviolette which helped with connecting with him and learning about the future potential within the industry. “

Ali wants to provide opportunities for students and give back to the school that began his professional career. For more information on the October
