NVCC Professor Honored by Connecticut CPAs with ‘Educator of Excellence’ Award

Naugatuck Valley Community College Professor of Accounting Scott R. Colvin, CPA has been honored with an “Educator of Excellence” award by the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants (CTCPA).

The CTCPA created the “Educator of Excellence” awards, known as “The Eddys,” to recognize Connecticut accounting professors who have had a positive influence on the lives and careers of their students by exceling in teaching and mentoring, inspiring students to reach beyond the ordinary and going the extra mile for their students.  Students nominate outstanding professors; winners are selected by a panel representing a cross section of the CTCPA membership and the Connecticut business community via blind review.

“It’s a happy time, a humbling time and I’m very grateful,” said Professor Colvin, who reveals that his key to teaching success is making a genuine connection with students. “It’s important that rapport is there with students… that comes best by knowing the industry.”

Awards were presented in three categories: Four-Year College/University Professor, Two-Year College/University Professor and Adjunct Professor. Professor Colvin took top honors in the Two-Year College/University Professor category. The following is an excerpt from the winning nomination:

“He has not only provided me with technical accounting skill, but has also shared his own career experiences… More than once when I felt uncertain about my future, he inspired me with his experiences in order to show me that success is neither quick nor easy.”

Professor Colvin, who is a practicing CPA, notes that the accounting field goes well beyond taxes. He says it also requires business acumen and people skills.
