Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., President, Naugatuck Valley Community College, and Dr. Nivea L. Torres, Superintendent, Connecticut Technical High School System have announced the planned March 2015 opening of the Danbury based Advanced Manufacturing Technology Program at the Henry Abbott Technical High School.

The program meets the workforce training needs of manufacturers in the Danbury area. Program graduates will be able to:

• Read and interpret blueprints.
• Perform job layouts by measuring, marking, scribing and using hand tools.
• Work with the most common metals, such as cold-rolled steel, hot-rolled steel, tool steel and aluminum.
• Understand Cartesian Coordinates, tooling vices and fixtures and setting cutting tools in holders.
• Set-up and operate manual milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and horizontal, vertical and cold saws.
• Create simple CNC programs, review and edit programs and demonstrate knowledge of basic functions and commands.
• Perform basic set-up and operation of CNC machines, such as vertical 5 & 3 axis mills, 2 and 3 axis lathes.
• Understand basic Quality Control Processes, including Statistical Process Control (SPC) & Lean Manufacturing Principals.

The Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (AMTC) at NVCC has a strong record of success with area manufacturing employers. Since its creation in 2012, the AMTC has graduated and placed over 100 students in manufacturing careers.

Company presidents and human resource directors agree, the training at NVCC has made a difference for them. Michael J. Iassogna, Principal, Tier ONE, LLC noted, “Tier One was in need of machine operators who could step right in and keep CNC machines running around the clock. We hired four recent graduates of NVCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Program and found that they possessed the basic skills to hit the ground running and help run our equipment right away. They have the basic foundation for entry into the machining field and are readily trainable for a variety of assignments.”

Pat Van Tassel, Training Specialist/Facilitator, The Barden Corporation, commented favorably on the company’s experience with NVCC manufacturing grads, “Many of our employees are graduates of NVCC. The program provides needed skills that fill the void that the manufacturing industry is encountering. Many employees are excited about the program beginning in Danbury. The program will help Barden employees increase current skills and learn new ones which will help them be successful in their careers.”
