NVCC Marks Black History Month with Performance, Conversation, Food and Campus Voices
The Black Student Union (BSU) at Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted a series of events throughout February to mark Black History Month. The events celebrated African-American culture, food, music, dance and history.

On February 10, 2015, BSU presented “A Journey,” which, in performer Kimberly Wilson’s words, was “a look at the black experience told through the eyes of the black woman.” A professional actress and singer from Westport and long-time member of the Theatre Artists Workshop, Wilson brought to life seven historical African-American women, including an African queen, Harriet Tubman, a slave girl, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou.

On February 17, the BSU hosted an open mic and trivia session to celebrate African-American culture and the meaning of Black History Month.

The BSU convened a panel discussion on February 23 to explore the question, “In general, how [has] the racial climate of the United States impacted [fueled] the formation of movements such as Black Lives Matter and the importance of such movements?” Professors William Foster, Kathy Taylor and Director Antony Wormack engaged students the discussion.  Savannah Green, President of the BSU asked probing questions, prepared beforehand by members of the club.  Professor Elma Solomon, BSU Faculty Advisor was at hand to support the event. Professors Patricia Pallis and Julia Petitfrere brought their classes. The event was followed by a soul food lunch and continued conversation.

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis attended the discussion and noted that she was grateful to be able to attend the panel discussion on the racial climate of the United States, sponsored by the Black Student Union (BSU). “I support and encourage conversations that move us closer to an understanding of the value of our common humanity and the need to address calls for just and fair treatment of our brothers and sisters.”

Bold, smart and unified, the BSU is a student club on campus that supports African-American students and teaches about African-American culture and heritage through public events like these. You can join their group on Facebook, “Black Student Union—NVCC.” For more information about the club’s weekly meetings and events, contact club advisor Elma Solomon at This email address is being protected from spambots.
