NVCC Library Celebrates Grand Opening of “Reading Commons”

Newly-Designed Area to Encourage Browsing, Reading, and Discovery
NVCC’s Max R. Traurig Library celebrated the grand opening of a new “Reading Commons” on the College’s Waterbury Campus on April 9. NVCC’s President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. along with Director of Library Services Jaime Hammond, Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Lisa Dresdner, and Interim Dean of Administration Dana Elm joined students, faculty and staff in cutting the ribbon for a newly-designed section of the library that includes new books, popular fiction, newsmakers and books on personal growth, graphic novels, comics, and manga, and more. The books and redesign were made possible thanks to the 2018 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award that NVCC’s Max R. Traurig Library received in 2018 from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). The ACRL awards recognize an outstanding community college, college, and university library each year and provide a $3,000 gift to each winner.
The idea to create a reading commons on the 4th floor of the library came from feedback received from students who were frequently looking for an area dedicated to fiction and reading.
“Students were asking for the fiction section, and as an academic library, we didn’t have a central location to point them to. Through the collaboration of the library staff, we were able to repurpose a section of the library to create a warm and welcoming environment that would encourage browsing and discovery,” said Hammond who also thanked President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. and Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Lisa Dresdner for their support of the library.
“The Reading Commons is truly an example of the way this college models and creates programs and initiatives based on student needs and feedback,” said Dr. Dresdner.
“The library is place of exploration and truth,” said President De Filippis. “We are very fortunate at NVCC to have such a talented and generous team of librarians, joyfully and ably led by its Director, Jaime Hammond.”
NVCC’s Library is open seven days a week and houses a collection of more than 30,000 circulating print books and more than 4,500 reference books in addition to other media such as periodicals, DVDs, and CDs. For hours of operation and more information, visit nv.edu/library.
