New Student Orientations on NVCC’s Waterbury and Danbury Campuses Begin New Chapter for Many Students
Naugatuck Valley Community College welcomed dozens of new students attending the school’s first-ever orientation at its new Danbury campus at 190 Main Street on Wednesday, January 11. NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., Danbury Associate Dean Antonio Santiago, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Ronald Picard, Ph.D. welcomed students and congratulated them on taking the first step towards their future. Representatives from the school’s library, Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), Center for Academic Planning & Student Success (CAPSS), and offices of Student Activities and Financial Aid gave mini-presentations on the many resources available to help students succeed in their studies.

“This is a first step for a new life,” said President De Filippis in her welcoming remarks at Danbury on Wednesday.

NVCC’S new and expanded 190 Main Street Danbury campus has become a destination for more than 1,200 students who are enrolled there. Associate Dean Santiago noted that, “students come to the new campus and they stay. They are embracing the new campus. It’s exciting to see them find a home at this campus.” The new campus occupies approximately 20,000 sq. feet, which is over three times the size of the previous campus. The larger space facilitates improved resources for students who enroll at the Danbury campus, including additional classrooms; a large lecture space; computer labs; science labs; a health lab; a large multipurpose room for tutoring, library, a seasonal bookstore; and a student lounge. The facility accommodates both credit and non-credit classes, with substantial capacity to accommodate increased enrollment in both areas.  The College has substantially increased the number and type of courses offered, including a new Weekend College.

On NVCC’s Waterbury campus, orientation took place on Wednesday, January 18 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Orientation events included a parent boot camp, giveaways from the Student Government Association, break-out sessions for students and parents, and a trade-show like set up featuring information tables on the myriad of resources available. Speakers at Waterbury included Sarah Gager, Dean of Student Services; President De Filippis, William H. Foster, English Professor, Irene Rios-Knauf, Dean of Academic Affairs; Public Safety Interim Lieutenant Jeff D’Alusio; Bonnie Goulet, Director of Counseling and Advising and Student Success and Robert Sheftel, Director of the Academic Center for Excellence and Jaime Hammond, Director of Library Services. The College held events in Café East and West, the Prism Lounge, and the Cistulli Student Center. More than 100 students were welcomed at the Waterbury new student orientation.
