Naugatuck Valley Community College Students Present at National Student Nurses' Association Conference
Four NVCC freshman nursing students, Jael Aboagye, Tara East, Annastasia Mkhize, and Kerry Rowan attended the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) annual conference where they successfully submitted a resolution that advocated for nursing students to be designated as essential workers in light of the existing nursing shortage exacerbated by the COVID epidemic. The NSNA utilizes resolutions as the basis for the policies and actions of this pre-nursing organization. During the process of crafting the resolution, nursing students had the opportunity to share their opinions not only with fellow students, but also with multiple healthcare organizations including the American Nurses Association. The students presented the resolution and advocated for its adoption at the House of Delegates, which had members from every state and U.S. territories.

Freshman nursing students Tara East and Kerry Rowan also presented a poster at the conference reinforcing the information about the resolution with the goal of increasing the knowledge and support of the conference participants.

Rowan commented, “The NSNA conference was a fantastic experience. I presented our Resolution to the committee and answered questions about the resolution; ultimately, they voted to accept it into this year's agenda.  Tara and I also created a poster to explain our resolution. We were present during the conference to answer questions and speak with other nursing students from around the country. I enjoyed hearing their experiences and advice from second-year nursing students. In addition to the great lectures, and the questions and answer sessions throughout the conference, I was able to attend an American Red Cross Disaster Preparedness course.”

Jael Aboagye, one of the authors for the NSNA resolution commented, “I think the NSNA conference was a great experience. We learned from it- how resolutions are presented, and the manner in which it is conducted. We also got to know that the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) questions are similar to how we are tested in school and how to answer examination questions.”

The NSNA conference offered the students a variety of seminars on a wide range of topics, including disaster preparedness, specialty areas, and the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX).
