Naugatuck Valley Community College Opens Fall Semester with Registration and Orientation
Naugatuck Valley Community College welcomed students, faculty, and staff back to campus for the fall semester beginning August 26, 2020. For the fall semester NVCC is following recommendations set by the CDC, Connecticut Department of Public Health and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) to minimize risk. Guidelines, including physical distancing, mask requirements, capacity limits, and directional arrows have been set in place. Classrooms are equipped with hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, while service counters are protected by plexiglass shields and sneeze guards.

NVCC Interim CEO, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D. noted that the College is offering several options for classes including on campus, on-line and hybrid models. Academics/Academic-Programs/Instructional-Methods

CEO Dresdner summarized the College’s fall strategy. “We are making every effort to accommodate the needs of our students while ensuring everyone’s safety and health. Traditional, on-ground classes are in classrooms with seating that is socially distanced, and while some of our online courses are designed for students to learn at their convenience throughout the week, others (‘Live Remote Online’ or LRON) are offered virtually on specific days and times so students will still engage ‘live’ with their professors.”

Dr. Dresdner emphasized how excited the whole college is to meet our new students: “We’re very excited for our new students to learn what so many already know about NVCC, that we are all doing our part to help them succeed and reach their goals!”

Academic Affairs and Student Services teams prepared the fall orientation program which included a virtual introduction to the campus and student resources. Karen Blake, Director of Student Activities explained, “The orientation process for both the Waterbury and Danbury campuses was held virtually. All students who participated had the opportunity to submit a questionnaire at the end of the orientation newsletter and were entered into a drawing for a $200.00 gift card. NVCC student Asley Snead was announced as the winner yesterday, August 31, 2020. New students received information through their college email. The email contained orientation video messages from NVCC CEO, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D; Dean of Student Services, Sarah Gager; Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Justin Moore, Ph.D.; and Student Government President, Hailey Moran."

The virtual orientation featured a "Fun Week", where Student Activities and Student Government interacted with new students answering questions and concerns about the upcoming semester during Virtual Pen Pal discussions.  They also awarded gift cards to the winners of "Kahoot!", "Name That Tune" and "At Home Scavenger Hunt.”  The "Fun Week" ended with an "Open Mic" where students sang, played the guitar, keyboard and read poetry.  It was a great way to meet new students.  Many more virtual events are planned for students throughout the semester to help them meet other students!  Student should check their college email weekly for links to the events.
