Naugatuck Valley Community College Hosts National Phi Theta Kappa
The Alpha Theta Epsilon Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Naugatuck Valley Community College and Student Government Association (SGA) hosted students from six different states for the inaugural New England Regional Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Leadership Conference in the Founders Hall Community Room on the Waterbury campus of the College.  Joanne Saalfrank, Vice-President Alpha Theta Epsilon Chapter spoke with us about the organization of the Conference. “The goal of the event was to establish the framework and precedent for an annual event that features speakers whose career paths are exemplary for aspiring students.”  The guest speaker, at this year’s inaugural event was Dr. Chris Berg. Saalfrank summarized the take-away as one that inspired students to be better communicators and aware of how they present themselves. “Dr. Berg is super inspiring.” She noted. “If he can do what he has done, going from being a homeless college student to being a self-employed entrepreneur, then so can we.”

Naugatuck Valley Community College President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., and Dean of Academic Affairs, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D., welcomed students to the conference. President De Filippis commented on the conference, “This is a wonderful opportunity for student leadership from six different states to come together to explore diversity, purpose and advocacy in leadership. A big bravo to NVCC students: Joanne Saalfrank, Salma Akter, and Erika Crabe for their leadership and dedication to NVCC. And I extend a very special thank you to Professors Harding and Kaufmann for bringing this event to NVCC.”

The event featured a series of break-out sessions that focused on coaching tools, effective communication, emotional intelligence and team work.  The students acknowledged special thanks to NVCC Professors Lisa Kaufman and John Harding for their leadership of the PTK program at NVCC.
