Naugatuck Valley Community College Celebrates Poetry at November Confluencia
On Wednesday, November 30, NVCC held the final Confluencia of 2016 at the Playbox Theatre on its Waterbury Campus. The evening began with a casual reception where students, staff, and faculty enjoyed refreshments and conversation amidst jazz standards played by NVCC’s own student ensemble.  Among the evening’s readers were César Sánchez Beras, a writer, poet, and educator born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, who has published numerous poetry collections in Spanish; Julia Petitfrere, a fiction writer and Assistant Professor of English at NVCC; Mark Saba, author of poetry collection Painting a Disappearing Canvas, and poet Marianela Medrano. Student Government Association (SGA) Vice President Carlos Romero welcomed students to the event and read Emily Dickinson’s poem, "I Shall Not Live In Vain" before the open mic portion of the evening.

Held four times per academic year, Confluencia is a community gathering featuring an evening of music and poetry. The event was established in October 2008 by Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., NVCC’s president, who was appointed in July of that year. “It is a way to honor talented writers and all they have achieved in their life’s work and a way to share their personal experiences with others,” President De Filippis said. “The literal meaning of the title ─ a coming or flowing together, meeting or gathering at one point ─ describes what we envision when our community becomes part of the excitement on our campus. It is an opportunity for the College to affirm the centrality of community in all that we do and to underscore our intent to remain an essential part of the literary heart of the region.” NVCC looks forward to hosting four more Confluencia events in 2017 with the first scheduled for spring.
