Naugatuck Valley Community College Art Student Gives Print and Copy Center a Fresh Look

The Print and Copy Center on the Waterbury campus of Naugatuck Valley Community College is sporting a fresh new look that provides a more welcoming experience for students, faculty and staff. Recognizing the center’s need for College identity and artistic décor, Alex Arcila, lead duplicating technician, approached Amanda Lebel, Assistant Professor of Art. Professor Lebel referred the challenge to the Art Club, from which Madeeha (Mads) Sheikh came forward to take on the challenge. “She spent days measuring, drawing, planning, working with a projector and finally a few days later this beautiful, bright NVCC logo transformed the wall and the copy center.”
Madeeha Sheikh, or Mads, as you may know her, is a fourth semester student studying art at NVCC. She is the current Art Club President, LABSS Visual Art Assistant, and managing editor of The Tamarack Newspaper. She is graduating this fall 2019 with an AA in Visual Art, and intends to return to NVCC to study Computer-Aided Drafting for its applications to the art field and the often-overlooked relationship between Art and STEM.
Earlier this year, she was honored to have two of her works exhibited in the Hartford Art School Community Exhibition, and four pieces featured in Fresh Ink. She won third place in the Society of Professional Journalists College Contest for her editorial, “The Hate That Kills”, a response to the rise of weaponized violence directed at people from marginalized communities.
Her work will be featured at NVCC in the Alumni Art Exhibition in the Founder’s Hall Community Room from November 7-22, with an opening reception on November 7 from 5:30 – 6:00 P.M. Her work will also be featured in the Prints for the Amazon Exhibition on the Walkway West between Kinney Hall and the Arts Building from December 2-6, and the coinciding End of Semester Art Exhibition in the Leever Atrium and 4th Floor of the Art Department, with a joint reception on December 5 from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M.
Madeeha intends to become an art educator, and believes that there is an artist that exists inside of us all.
