Multi-Cultural Club in Danbury Hosts First Event

The Danbury Campus of Naugatuck Valley Community College is growing in enrollment and social opportunities for its students. The first club on the Danbury Campus was the Multi-Cultural Club who recently hosted a Student Reading & Open Mic, December 12, 2014. The event was held at the historical Marian Anderson Recital Hall, and was sponsored by the Urban Scholars Writing Program. Students and friends made time during busy end-of-semester schedules to share multi-cultural gifts, talents, and support.

The evening started with club officers Jonathan De Los Santos and Kesley Grumman talking about the club as the hosts of the event. Then Katie Farley and the Shamrocks, shared a traditional Irish dance.  Evita Ramos moved the audience with a unique rendition of Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come." Later, De Los Santos, a musician and Danbury student government senator, soulfully blew his saxophone, while Sammy Hammouda accompanied on his guitar.

Joseph Eller passionately shared his thoughts on the American Dream, and his goal to use higher education to do something special for his mother. NVCC student, Sarah Hull brought many to remembrance and tears with an original heartfelt poem about December 14, 2012 in her beloved hometown, Sandy Hook, Newtown, CT.

Refreshments were provided by the NVCC Danbury Campus Student Government before and after the program for NVCC students at the Danbury Campus building at 183 Main Street.

Professor Lizzie Louis, the club's advisor, said "The event was a success with many more to come. The Multi-Cultural Club strives to offer strategic events for students to explore together the value and beauty of cultural diversity."
