Waterbury, CT - On Fri., Oct. 25, the Allied Health, Nursing and Physical Education Division hosted the Connecticut HOSA - Future Health Professionals Fall Leadership Conference at Naugatuck Valley Community College. The event was designed to promote career opportunities in the health care industry to current Connecticut high school students while increasing their awareness of industry best practices. 

NVCC Foundation member Susan Troupe who co-advises the Connecticut HOSA chapter helped bring the event to the College last year in order to show off the growing allied health programs housed at the College, all of which beat industry standards for licensure.

During the event, prospective students networked with program leaders, engaged in breakout sessions and toured the College’s nursing labs with senior-level nursing students. The keynote address was delivered by Deborah Weymouth, senior vice president of Western Connecticut Health Network, which manages Danbury and New Milford Hospitals. Her topic, “Health Care: You Make a Difference," addressed the many career opportunities available in healthcare today.

“We’re so happy to have had the privilege of hosting Connecticut’s future health care professionals at NVCC two years in a row,” said Eileen George, M.S.N., director of Allied Health, Nursing and Physical Education. “It’s a great opportunity for students to engage with the industry, get the perspective of current college students and experience some of what takes place in the nursing and allied health simulation laboratories."

The event catered to approximately 130 attendees from 9 high schools. 

HOSA - Future Health Professionals is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education. Since its inception in 1976, the organization has grown steadily reaching over 150,000 members through 48 chartered HOSA State Associations and approximately 3,500 secondary and post-secondary/collegiate chapters.

2012 NVCC Allied Health Program Pass Rates

Respiratory Care graduates achieved a 100% pass rate on the CT State Licensure Exam and received 3 of the 4 scholarships awarded by the CT Society for Respiratory Care.

Radiologic Technology graduates achieved a 100% pass rate on the Radiologist Technologist Registry Examination.

Nursing graduates continue to achieve above average performance on the NCLEX licensure exam.
