Naugatuck Valley Community College officially welcomed Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Oonya Kempadoo at a small reception held on Wed., Oct. 16. Kempadoo was greeted by students, employees and community members before headlining the first Confluencia of the year.

A native of Grenada, Kempadoo currently teaches Caribbean Literature/Creative Writing at the College, a vessel through which she hopes to launch a larger all-campus writing project.

"Ms. Kempadoo is a wonderful addition to our classrooms and cultural activities on campus," said President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

"We look forward to learning about the creative process through her shared expertise, particularly as she leads us all through the collaborative writing experience. It is a wonderful academic experiment in how we document our lives and culture."

Kempadoo is one of approximately 800 outstanding foreign faculty and professionals who will teach and/or research in the United States through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program in 2013-2014. The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program brings scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. colleges and universities to significantly internationalize campuses and curricula.

Last year, NVCC’s first Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Pascal Meccariello enriched the College by teaching Ceramics and Caribbean Art and Culture and leading the creation of a 15-foot mural "Sungarden" displayed on the bridge of Technology Hall.
