ACE’s Supplemental Instruction Program Schedules Additional Sections to Meet Increased Demand

Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) continue to promote student success. In addition to their regularly scheduled lectures, students enrolled in a developmental math or English class now also attend one hour of SI each week. During the sessions, students are able to do homework, clarify assignments and review important concepts – all with the help of an experienced tutor who can answer their questions and guide them in their studies.

Over the past two semesters, the SI program has had a significant positive impact on student success. Student participation in the program has grown from 278 in the fall 2014 semester to 381 in the spring 2015 semester—an increase of 37 percent. Additionally, student attendance at scheduled SI sessions has risen 28 percent for math and 15 percent for English, over the past year. This means that more students are taking advantage of the program, and getting the help they need.

Due to the success of the program, 20 SI sections were held in the spring 2015 semester, and approximately 50 SI sections are scheduled to run in the upcoming fall 2015 semester.

The ACE, located in Ekstrom Hall, Room E-500 and open seven days a week, is a free tutoring center available to all NVCC students. The center’s helpful, friendly staff has tutoring expertise covering a wide variety of subjects including writing, math, science, English as a second language, accounting and computers.
