We are working virtually to assist you! Virtual Advising sessions are available!

The Center for Academic Planning and Student Success (CAPSS) welcomes you to Live Support for NVCC Students. While the campus is open, for the safety of our students and staff we are continuing to advise virtually.  In this open forum we can answer general academic and advising questions, connect you to counselors, advisors, disability services, testing and transfer information.  Please click on the link below to meet with someone in real time.  If you’re trying to access this site outside the times listed below please email us at with your questions and contact information. If you do not have access to email, the department is checking voicemail each day.  Please call 203-575-8025 and an advisor will get back to you as soon as possible.

NVCC's Center for Academic Planning & Student Success (CAPSS) believes that each learner has unique value and is entitled to be viewed as a whole person. Our professional counselors and academic advisors can help you with personal growth counseling, career development, and academic development. CAPSS encompasses several functions on campus including counseling, advising, testing and disability services. Our mission is to promote student success by providing a supportive environment and coordinating efforts of faculty and staff to assist students from initial advising through graduation. The Center helps with career, educational and personal concerns, ensuring each individual achieves their educational objectives.

What We Offer

Academic Advising

Your academic advisor will help you to:

  • understand your major and its requirements.
  • plan courses for the upcoming term(s) 
  • consider career and job options for your major
  • help choose a major if you are undecided 

Personal Counseling

While the campus is temporarily closed, if you would like to speak directly with a counselor, please contact Sam Johnson or Tammy MacBrien Downs.

We will help you:

  • discuss your academic issues and dilemmas 
  • make your life, career, and education decisions 
  • develop better self-confidence
  • manage your stress 
  • alleviate other personal barriers to your success in college 
  • find referrals to outside agencies as needed. 

Transfer Planning 

While the campus is temporarily closed, if you would like to speak directly with a transfer advisor, please contact Sue Houlihan.

If you are interested in transferring from NVCC to another college or university, we will help you:

  • acquire information about transferring through individual counseling consider transfer programs within the CT State College & University System 
  • look at transfer articulations with other colleges 
  • meet transfer counselors from other colleges and universities  
  • create a personalized pathway to earning a four-year degree. 

Career Planning

While the campus is temporarily closed, if you would like to speak directly with someone regarding Career Planning, please contact the Center for Job Placement and College Opportunities via email or visit their webpage for more information.

Are you ready to start planning your career? You can: 

  • schedule an appointment for individual career counseling
  • research job and salary information, career assessments, job trends and more on Career Coach.
  • consider career testing with your counselor using the O*NET Interest Profiler at My Next Move or other online surveys
