Taking a Class or two First time in college

Enrollment Steps for a Non-degree Student

As a non-degree student you:

  • may take up to 11 credits per semester
  • are not eligible to apply for financial aid

Please note, students are only eligible to apply for Federal Financial Aid if they are registered in a degree/certificate program. Non-degree students are not eligible. If you are interested in financial aid, a part-time degree/certificate program may work better for you. Speak to our admissions counselors for assistance.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Policy & Equivalencies

Naugatuck Valley Community College, in alignment with state and national standards, grants academic credit on the basis of scores on the Advanced Placement Examinations (AP Exams) administered by the College Entrance Examination Board. Students who earn a score of 3 or higher receive credit for the courses for which the exams are stipulated as measures.

Please refer to the NVCC Equivalents for College Board Advanced Placement Exams grid for more information.

All score reports must be submitted to the Registrar's Office.

While the NVCC campus buildings are closed, please apply using our online application.

Along with your application, you may need to provide the following documents.  For instance, if your class requires a pre-requisite or you want to see if you are eligible to be waived from placement testing.

Previous College Transcripts (Optional)

If you have taken college level classes while in high school, you can upload a transcript from the respective college to see if your courses are eligible for credit at NVCC. Transcripts may also be used to waive placement testing and prerequisite requirements.

Test Scores (Optional)

If you have taken SAT’s, ACT’s and/or the GED, upload test scores to determine if you need to take the placement exam and for placement into math and English classes.

Virtual Advising & Registration

Once you have been accepted to NVCC, you will receive an email from Admissions with instructions on how to register for your virtual advising and registration session.

At this personal advising session you will work with your advisor to build your class schedule and register for classes.

Pay Your Tuition

Your final step is to make a payment.

Payment options include cash, check and credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express). An Installment Payment Plan is also available.

If you've received a financial aid award, you may not have to make a payment; please discuss payment responsibilities with financial aid staff.
