Program Overview

NVCC is the only community college in Connecticut that offers a degree in horticulture. Through the program, you can continue your education at a four-year university or apply for employment in landscaping, greenhouses, garden centers or landscape design centers. Over 500 students have received training at NVCC and have gone on to start their own businesses. The University of Connecticut is the only other college in the state that offers a horticulture degree and graduates from our program can expect to seamlessly transfer to UCONN to earn a bachelor’s degree.

  • Career-oriented students are prepared for beginning positions as Greenhouse Manager, Landscape Designer, Golf Course Superintendent, Nursery Grower, Plant Propagator, Landscape Maintenance Professional
  • Graduates of this program are eligible for transfer articulation to Uconn's Bachelor's of Horticulture Program. The transfer program guarantees complete transfer of NVCC courses.

These certifications are specialized to prepare students with immediate training for green-industry careers without the general education requirements of the associate degree.

The Associate of Science in horticulture includes the completion of two full years of study and an appropriate supervised cooperative work experience, which places students in greenhouses, wholesale nurseries, landscape businesses and agricultural extension agencies.

Graduates of the program find work in a variety of disciplines as greenhouse managers, landscape designers, arborists, pest management supervisors, plant propagators and more.Designed as a career program leading to the Associate in Science degree, the goal of the Horticulture Program is to prepare students for employment in landscape, garden centers, greenhouses, or related businesses, and for further education. The program includes the completion of two full years of study and an appropriate supervised cooperative work experience with nurseries, landscape businesses, greenhouses, and agricultural extension agencies. Graduates of the program find work in a variety of disciplines as greenhouse managers, arborists, landscape designers, pest management supervisors, plant propagators, and more. The Associate Degree Program also enables students to transfer, with articulated equivalency, to the University of Connecticut Horticultural Science Program.

Certificate Programs

The Horticulture Landscape Design Certificate is designed to prepare students for certification as Professional Landscape Designers. The certificate is designed to develop those skills in plant identification and culture, landscape mechanical skills, maintenance of landscapes, as well as hand drawing and sketching, computer aided designing portfolio assessments, leading to certification by the American Professional Landscape Designers. This program is affiliated with American Professional Landscape Design Association (APLD).

The Horticulture Program offers two professional certification programs in horticulture and landscape design. These certifications are specialized to prepare students with immediate training for green-industry careers without the general education requirements of the associate degree.

The Horticulture program is accredited by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) and is recognized as a re-certification site by the Association for Professional Landscape Designers (APLD).
