Program Overview

The Digital Arts program provides students with an in-depth understanding of digital media creation and production. The aim of the program is to produce digital media designers for jobs in training, marketing, advertising, web development, broadcasting, audio production, graphic art, production and electronic publishing. Digital artists have become an integral part of the mainstream communications medium; positions in digital media design and development exist in business, industry, government, education, and entertainment.

  • Career-oriented students are prepared for beginning positions in the creative field such as independent business owners, production assistants, freelance artists, or work in the area of video, web and social media, or graphics.
  • Students may to transfer to many universities with no lost time in areas such as Communication, Digital Arts, or various types of Media Design.

Earn a certificate 

Certificate programs in Animation and Motion GraphicsAudio/Video Production, Digital Graphics for Print and Screen, Electronic Music Production, and Emerging Media are available to students who do not wish to pursue a full two-year course of study.

Four Concentrations, Many Options for the Road Ahead

This is tightly knit sequence of courses designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of interactive software development and digital media design. Sharpen your skills or learn to become an interactive software/media designer. Interact with colleagues and explore interactive design principles, human-computer interaction theory, software engineering structures, instructional design methods, and visual and audio design principles. 

The mission of the Digital Arts Technology program is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of digital media creation and production. The aim of our program, with its specific focus areas, is to produce digital media designers prepared for jobs in training, marketing, advertising, web development, broadcasting, audio production, graphic art production and electronic publishing.

If you are pursuing a career in fine arts, advertising, audio production, broadcasting, education, electronic publishing, graphic art production, instructional design, marketing, or Web development, then this program is for you. Choose to focus on one of these areas:

  • If you have not taken the SATs, schedule a time to take your placement tests for English and Math.
  • Meet with a counselor or your advisor to choose your classes and register.

Want to specialize in Electronic Music and Audio Production?

Looking to learn new skills or enhance your talents in the areas of electronic music composition and audio production?

The certificate program serves the specialized need of students as well as individuals interested in electronic music composition and audio production. You will be exposed to important historical aspects that have influenced compositional styles as well as the impact of technology on music and art.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Audio is everywhere, quality audio is key.
  • Training and exposure to industry standard technology is what sets the amateur apart from the professional.
  • A perfect outlet for the merging of the technical and creative.

  • Want to specialize in Audio Video Production?

    If you already have a degree in design or you're currently employed in broadcast media, the Audio/Visual Certificate can be a great addition to your skill set.  You'll focus on the detailed study of audio production and sound design as well as visual composition and non-linear video editing.

    Here's what you need to know:

    • Audio can make or break any video production.
    • Anyone can make a video or film. It takes a trained individual to make a quality product.
    • Planning is key for any audio or video production.
    • Immediate hands-on exposure sets NVCC apart from many four-year programs.

This certificate provides students with exposure to industry standard software, common workflow, and adaptability in differing environments and workforce cultures.  Successful completion of the courses and ultimately the certificate will result in a portfolio of work that will be used by the graduate while seeking employment.

Students are required to achieve a grade of C or better in all coursework.

As a result of completing the certificate, students will be able to design two-dimensional digital graphics, three-dimensional object modeling, digital animation sequences, and interactive media applications. Graduates will be qualified to seek positions in the fields of graphic art production, character animation, electronic publishing, broadcasting, and Web design.
The certificate is designed for individuals who have already earned advanced degrees, are currently employed in interactive multimedia/Web design professions, and are looking for skill-enhancement opportunities. Students entering this certificate program should already have a foundation in the core components of multimedia design and development attained through career performance or degree acquisition. If the individual does not possess either a degree or experience, he/she should consider enrolling in the Digital Arts/Multimedia Authoring degree option. Certificate credits may also be applied toward related degree programs.

Academic & Transfer

Upon successfully completing one of the Digital Arts Technology Options, you should be eligible to transfer to one of the four Connecticut State Universities as a Junior. To receive transfer credit, a grade of C or better is required. Several private schools in the state will also take a majority of the classes, enabling you to enter their institution as a high level Sophomore or even a Junior. Several students have transferred to Universities in nearby states as well. Students are able to transfer to many universities with no lost time in areas such as Communication, Digital Arts, or various types of Media Design.
