Naugatuck Valley Community College Students Raise Funds for Saint Vincent DePaul Shelter

Each year the Student Government Association (SGA) at Naugatuck Valley Community College, led by Student Activities Director, Karen Blake, coordinates a “Community Project.” This year their project was a fundraising campaign for the Saint Vincent DePaul Shelter in Waterbury.  Through a semester-long series of events, in which many of the clubs of the SGA participated by hosting baked goods and candy sales, selling card sponsorships and fundraising from the students’ game room, they raised $1071.04. The funds were awarded to the Shelter for an Education Room where women and children read, learn and spend time.  Through an all campus campaign of faculty and staff, they also collected hundreds of books, and educational toys for the families to use during their stay at the shelter. The campaign was their spring semester project, which was completed last week when the final donation was made.  SGA Activities Director, Karen Blake commented on the resilience and dedication of the students to keep this initiative going all semester and bring it to a strong and meaningful conclusion. “I admire their vision, and I am proud to have helped them realize it.”
