Naugatuck Valley Community College Hosts Annual Honors Night

Naugatuck Valley Community College Hosts Annual Honors Night

Honors Night, an annual tradition at NVCC, celebrates graduation and the end of the semester by recognizing students for their leadership, academic excellence, and other achievements through the awarding of scholarships. This year students gathered to receive their awards in the Mainstage Theater, where NVCC’s Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D., the administration, and faculty awarded 243 scholarships and awards supported by the NVCC Foundation. Dr. Dresdner opened the event with congratulations and welcoming remarks, noting how the students being awarded distinguished themselves by maintaining high grades and demonstrating exemplary leadership and service. She praised them for having “excelled even in the midst of the pandemic by meeting extraordinary challenges with grace and grit.” Expressing great pride in the students’ achievements, Dresdner commented that “NVCC is blessed to be part of their personal journeys.”

Angela Chapman, Associate Dean of Development followed with well-deserved recognition of students’ achievements and thanks to the NVCC Foundation. She noted, "This year more than ever these scholarships are critical to the success of our students.  When crisis comes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, philanthropy becomes the bridge our students need to push forward to complete their degrees. Thanks to our donors who have bridged the gap for so many of our students.”

Justin Moore, Ph.D., Interim Dean of Academic Affairs moderated the program. He noted, “I was completely blown away by the level of student and faculty engagement at NVCC’s 2021 Honor’s Night. This year NVCC awarded 243 scholarships. Seventy-three students joined a hearty group of faculty in NVCC’s Main Stage Theater to celebrate their academic achievements. The turnout for this event suggests that we have an exciting future in front of us as we emerge from the fog of the pandemic and begin a return to our campuses. This fall we plan to have a healthy schedule of on-ground events, activities, and student clubs to welcome back our students, faculty, and staff. We can’t be any more excited to see a lively and bustling campus community once again.”

Due to the pandemic, parents, families, and friends were not in attendance. The College has prepared a video of thanks for donors featuring student representatives who shared what their scholarships mean to them. https://youtu.be/xQnOiYjI1d0
