NVCC Celebrates New Center for Health Sciences with Ribbon Cutting at Founders Hall

The east campus of Naugatuck Valley Community College was filled with pageantry and celebration to mark the ribbon-cutting for the new Center and dedication of the quadrangle directly in front of it to NVCC Professor Joseph V. Faryinarz. President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., welcomed a standing-room-only crowd of over a hundred people who came to participate in the celebrations. Provost and Senior Dean of Administration, James Troup opened the festivities with a note of thanks to all who made this moment possible. The afternoon program paid tribute to Joseph V. Faryniarz, Ed.D., NVCC Professor of Biological Sciences, Tamarack Arboretum Founder and Curator, and Agro-Bio Club Co-Advisor, in grateful recognition of his generous dedication to the grounds and mentoring of NVCC students. NVCC President Daisy Cocco DeFilippis expressed appreciation for the care and dedication that Faryinarz has shown the students and the grounds of NVCC, dating back years before she arrived. Michael Schwartz, Academic Assistant, NVCC shared anecdotes of the years of example and dedication shown to the students and the campus by Professor Faryniarz.

To mark this honor three tons of granite branded with a bronze plaque bearing an excerpt of the poem “To Be of Use” were installed. The design of the quad is simple and student-friendly, complete with volleyball net and bocce court.

Immediately following the dedication, President De Filippis welcomed Governor Dannel P. Malloy, CSCU President Mark Ojakian, Mayor Neil M. O’Leary, State Representative Arthur O’Neill, State Representative Geraldo Reyes and Pasquale (Bud) Salemi, Deputy Commissioner Department of Administrative Services, CT Division of Construction Services, and a crowd of over 100 well-wishers to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Center for Health Sciences at Founders Hall. President De Filippis thanked Governor Malloy for “his support of NVCC, visible in such significant projects as the GEAR UP Program, the NVCC Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, the Campus-wide Improvement projects and our magnificent renovated Founders Hall Center for Health Sciences, which we officially open today.” The program featured remarks from Governor Malloy, CSCU President Ojakian, Mayor O’Leary and Deputy Commissioner Salemi. The themes were consistent- President De Filippis, and the NVCC team were cutting this ribbon to celebrate successful outcomes for students, families and community partners. Everyone agreed- this was a proud moment for NVCC. Emily Verdosci, President NVCC Student Government Association (SGA) presented the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book to the Governor, President Ojakian, and Mr. Salemi on behalf of the College.

Refreshments and tours of the new Center for Sciences at Founders Hall concluded the event.
