CT Society of Professional Journalists Awards NVCC’s Tamarack Newspaper Five Excellence in Journalism Awards
The Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists honored NVCC's student newspaper, The Tamarack, with five Excellence in Journalism awards in the Collegiate Division of its 2019 contest.  The award-winning newspaper received six excellence in Journalism awards in 2018 and this most recent set of accolades marks another milestone for the paper. The CT Chapter of the SPJ presented awards to The Tamarackstaff in the following categories:
  • Editorial / Op-Ed – First Place: Kathleen Chesto, “Different Roads, On Civil Discourse”
  • Editorial / Op-Ed – Third Place: Madeeha Shiekh, Editorial, “The Hate That Kills”
  • Feature Photo – Third Place: Fabian Gonzalez-Rojas, “Coffeehouse Photo”
  • General Column – First Place: Alyssa Katz, Earth Matters, “The Tide Is High (and very red)”
  • General Column – Third Place: Alyssa Katz, Revolutionary Rhythms, “R-E-S-P-E-C-T for a Queen”

“As always, I am so proud of my staff and all their hard work,” said faculty advisor, Steve Parlato, A Professor of English NVCC. Parlato has taken the moment to reflect on all the thoughtful topics the staff covered this year, with pieces appearing on everything from neurological differences, gender disparity, LGBTQIA representation, homelessness, and immigration.

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., said, “What a terrific outcomes assessment achievement for Professor Parlato and our wonderful students. The fact that the Tamarack has embraced civic engagement and has produced articles recognized for their originality and excellence is commendable. I am bursting with gratitude and pride.”
